Essay Topics on Respect
Essay Topics on RespectWhen looking for essay topics on respect, you will need to consider the different components of this topic. Following are some of the main components.Respect has been defined as 'the feeling or act of respecting an individual or a person.' It is a feeling-action interaction, in essence. The essence of respect is essentially the act of appreciating or not appreciating someone's work or character and its merits. In the basic respect definition, there is no assurance of future rewards. Although most people in any society do understand that it is much better to be polite and respect someone than to be disrespectful, many do not recognize the alternative of not being polite. This results in various problems and situations.Respect is very important to the younger generation. It is definitely essential for a student who is trying to impress his/her professors to make the best use of the study period to demonstrate respect. A good way to show respect is by doing simple things such as not removing a piece of paper from the desk of the professor, making it look like you have nothing to do, waiting patiently when the professor needs to take a break, ignoring unnecessary explanations, etc.Another major component of the definition of respect is 'respect for others.' This is very different from being indifferent towards other people. When a person does not show respect for other people, he or she is considered to be rude, uncaring, and unkind.Respect, then, is basically the right to not be rude, uncaring, or unkind. One of the most effective ways to achieve respect is to give the impression that you give respect. One can accomplish this through praising, reprimanding, lecturing, refusing to give up in the middle of arguing, and more. The more respectful a personis, the more respect he or she will get.Nowadays, respect is not just a feeling. People are more aware of how to present themselves to others in a manner that gives respect. One way to do this is to use proper grammar and punctuation. While respect is a feeling, the heart of a person is still his (or her) feelings for another person. When a person acts with respect, it does not mean that the person acts selfishly. It simply means that the person respects himself/herself, others, and the overall culture of society.

Memorandum to the Tax Manager Casandra Rodgers Case - 1100 Words
Memorandum to the Tax Research Manager: Casandra Rodgers Case (Essay Sample) Content: MemorandumTo: The tax Research managerFrom: Tax Research DepartmentDate: March 26, 2016Re: Casandra Rodgers caseI have received your memo regarding Cassandras upscale clothing store in the city. Following a critical analysis of her business ledger in the year 2015, it is clear that in the year 2014 she incurred costs in designing a logo as well as store signage for a cost of $48,300. The payment was not done all at once, instead, it was divided into 3 sections. She paid $5000 as an upfront fee that very same year, in the year 2015, she cleared the required $25,000, and is expected to clear the remaining balance in 2016.In 2015, she employed a sales manager but had to cater for the cost of having his tattoo removed as it resembled the logo used by her competitive rival. In the year 2016, she received $75,000 as an advanced payment for an event to be held the following year. She is expected to submit designs for the events before February the following year failure to which 60% of the paid advance shall be reversed. It is also important to note that Cassandra donated some money as well cooperate bonds she inherited from her grandfather in the year 2009 to a womenà ¢Ã¢â ¬s shelter operated by her sister.Tax IssuesCasandraà ¢Ã¢â ¬s charitable donation to her sisterà ¢Ã¢â ¬s women care and proper documentation of the trade and business expensesIt seems pretty clear that Cassandra made charitable deductions. Whenever an individual itemizes on their income returns at the federal level, there are deductions made to any donations made to a charitable qualifying organization. Note that a lot of taxpayers in the United States of America (U. S. A), disagree with the IRS in its denial that there are a lot of instances that it has made tax deductions in cases related to whether the organization donated to is a recognized and qualified charitable organization. Additionally, the IRS critically analyzes to see whether the donations made represent a goo d and fair market value as well as it being properly substantiated. Note, that the Casandraà ¢Ã¢â ¬s sister may sell the bonds at premium, with this Casandra may incur a commission. On the other hand, her sister may utilize the bonds coupons to facilitate the recurrent expenses of the shelter. If Casandraà ¢Ã¢â ¬s contribution to the charitable organization was allowed as a charitable donation at that amount, she would be able to deduct a fair market value. This is in accordance to [CCH Dec. 37,959(M), 42 T.C.M 27, T.C. Memo. 1981-280, (Jun. 8, 1981)] tax court memorandum on fair market value pertaining to contributions to charitable organizations. In Cassandraà ¢Ã¢â ¬s case, the bonds she donated in 2009 were worth $1000 and were approximately 3yrs down to maturity, the bonds having an expected yield of 2.3% and a semiannual coupon rate of 5. 75% by mid of July 2015 would be worth $1138.Logo DesignIt is also clear that in the year 2014, Casandra incurred $48,000 for the de sign of a logo as well as storage signage. There is also no surprise here as a lot of taxpayers fail to understand that for intangible assets, it is their sole responsibility to capitalize the amounts paid to different parties for such transactions. In the presented case, the intangible asset falls under a trademark, a franchise, or tradesmen and is well defined in 1. 197 à ¢Ã¢â ¬ 2 (b). According to this particular section, it is made clear that amortization needs to be done on capitalized intangibles and once this is done there shall not be any other form of amortization in regards to that particular intangible asset. It is important to make it clear that the logo Casandra acquired is a trademark, a trademark is a name, a device, a word, or any combination of these that is used by a business to identify itself as well as its goods and services from others. The amortization of assets that fall under section 197 is a ratable 15 years and this begins on the first day of the month the intangible asset is acquired, in this case, the logo.Advance Payments done for the Designing of DressesThe dress designing business as well as the money Cassandra was paid in advance are also taxable. Stated in [631UST, 9284], the court ruled out that a dance studio was justified and liable to include cash by any negotiable note in a yearà ¢Ã¢â ¬s gross income in which payments were received. Note that this payments are usually included in the receipt book of the year they got received. Installments made through contracts also fall in this particular category. For a tax payer on the accrual basis, it is not the receipt that determines the inclusion of the amount in net income but the right to receive. Therefore, if Cassandra uses the accrual method, she shall have to include in her income a particular advance paid to her in that particular year. If on the...

United States Government Expansion Essay - 752 Words
In the last century and a half, the United States Government has grown significantly in size, scope, and influence. There are many contributing factors to this expansion. The quest for civil rights, presidential programs and how those programs affected domestic policy, and the foreign policies that were a result of imperialism, nationalism, and the many conflicts that the nation became involved in were the biggest catalysts attributing to this progressive development in the government. These effects have shaped the government from the vision of the Founding Fathers into what it is today. The expansion of the governmentââ¬â¢s power, particularly the Executive Branch, has its roots in Progressivism. Based on the ideas of philosophers likeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦US protection from Asian countries and the need for a Pacific base were the reasons for getting Hawaii. Both of these acquisitions would become a huge part of foreign policy and the need for an expanded government in t he coming years. As imperialism extended the countryââ¬â¢s power and influence through diplomacy and military might, the policy of non-intervention would quickly become outdated. Due to Britain and France running out of men, money, and material, the US had to get involved in World War I. This involvement brought about numerous new policies and activities by the government. The War Industries Board, Food Administration, Railway Board, and the US Shipping Board came to be. Railroads were nationalized and two new laws, the Espionage Act of 1917 and the Sedition Act of 1918, were put into effect as a result of US involvement in the war. Hawaii would become a key part of World War II with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. One of the Cold War ââ¬Å"battlefieldsâ⬠was Alaska. Due to the Truman Doctrine and its policy of containing communism, the US gor involved in Korea and later, Vietnam. Domestic policy changes, also tied to Progressivism, were a major component of the expansion of the size, scope, and influence of the US government. The Growth Of The Elderly Population - 779 Words
The elderly have had considerably lowering SNAP take-up rates than other age groups. The growing aging population created a downward trajectory for participation rates because as more become eligible for SNAP they continue to have one of the lowest rates of SNAP take-up. Additionally, the take-up among the aging population drastically varies by state impacting the overall participation rate among the subgroup. States that have a high proportion of eligible seniors living in rural areas have lower elderly SNAP take-up rates, than those states where more eligible elderlies lives in more urban areas. States in the Northeast like Vermont and Massechesutts have elderly SNAP take-up rates in the 60% range, while states like Wyoming, Arkansas, and Kansas have elderly SNAP take-up rates between 24% and 27%. Thus, as Americans age the overall SNAP participation is impacted (Cunnyngham, 2010; Gundersen Ziliak, 2008; Ziliak, 2013). Consequently, as the elderly population grows it becomes an im portant population to examine with regard to why their participation rates are so low. Research has shown that elderly individuals have self-identified the complex or lengthy application processes as a contributing factor to not participating in food stamps. Literature has also found the criteria for eligibility to be too complex to determine if they may even qualify for the benefit. For example elderly individuals often incorrectly believe they are only eligible for the minimum SNAP benefit,Show MoreRelatedElderly Population In America. Marketing Mix On Trafalgar Pub
Questions: write a report to the proprietor of the Trafalgar Pub making recommendations for a marketing plan with regard to: 1. Defining the target market 2. Specifying a position statement, and 3. Defining the marketing mix Answers: Introduction The Trafalgar is a renowned pub cum hotel which is situated in the suburb area of Sydney. The hotel is specialized in providing food, beverages and the gaming facilities. The hotel has the huge resources and a base of skilled staffs. For years the hotel cum pub is dominating the entire pub market and still now, the pub is positioned in the second position in the market. The popularity of the pub or it can be said that the sales of the pub is declining in nature and the pub is recently undertaking the business plans which is required for the pub to regain the number one position in the market. The report is based on the expansion strategy undertaken by the pub and in this respect the target market of the company, the reasons for choosing the target market and positioning strategy of the pub and the future marketing mix of the company are discussed (Pomering, 2014). Background of the company The company was started in the 19th century when the suburb area of Sydney was known as a great place for the industrialization. The industrialization is the main factor which helped the pub and hotel to establish itself in the market of the Sydney. The main target customers of the hotel was the workers of the neighbour organizations and with the industrial development the organization also growth up. The hotel was a popular destination for the organizations workers as the workers liked to prefer the hotel in two different times; one is the launch time and the second one is the after work. Both of the time the workers used to get the relaxation from the hotel and it was a great place for them to enjoyment (Lim and Ching, 2011). Due to the growing cost of the suburb area the industrialization process of the pub has been hampered and the organizations are shifted to the area where the living cost is low. Due to the shifting of the industries from the area and the growth of the new soci etal background in the area the pub has observed the decline in its sales volume. The workers from the industrial area are moving from the areas where the new sets up of the industry are made. In the outskirt areas of Sydney the owners of the organizations and factories are replacing the manufacturing units to avail the low cost facilities in those areas. The suburb area of Sydney has now got a new class of people and the social structure of the area has changed a lot. In this situation the pub needs to find out the new target customers so that, the position of the pub can be regained. The factories which were there in the market are destroyed and the warehouses are replaced for the official works only. The warehouses and the remaining houses of the factories are using as official work or as an official purposes (Pomering, 2014). The blue colour workers were the main target customers of the pub and recently, the target customers of the pub has been changed. Projected business plan for the company Due to the changes made in the societal structure of the entire area it is a big problem for the pub to exist in the present market and to earn a huge rate of profit as the pub has not matched it with the changing need and the changing societal structure. The pub after doing a research on the present environment and market scenario has realized a need to initiate for a new business plan. The business plan refers to an inclusion of the restaurant in combination of the present structure of the organization. The pub has undertaken the second market position and the main competitor has the facility of restaurant also. To become competitive in the market the pub has included the provision of introducing a restaurant by using the unused second floor of the pub. The pub is facing the problem with its present target market and thus the business plan includes the target market for the pub also (Kimes and Beard, 2013). 1. Target market The target market for the pub is the white colour workers. Looking at the changing dimension of the society, it is decided by the proprietor of the pub to target a new customer base. The area is filled with the young couples as the workers of the factories have gone away in different places and the nearby apartments are filled up by the young working couples who have come in the rent system. The entire area is filled up by the urban people and the urban people demands a better environment from the pub. The survey has suggested that there is no separate provision in the pub for the blue colour workers and for the white colour workers and the blue workers prefer to go the pub frequently as the environment of the pub matches with their personality. Generally, the blue coloured male workers visit the pub on regular basis and the urban young couple feels hesitated while visiting the pub at night. The research also has suggested that the single households, the couples and the other people on shared basis visit the local pubs in the suburb area of Sydney and that situation has been changed after the factories are demolished from the nearby areas and the blue colour workers are mostly replaced by the white coloured workers. The scenario of the company has been changed and the neighbour area of the organization is comprised of the officials of different offices as the entire place has replaced the residences. The characteristic of the residence of the place has been changed entirely and the residence of the place has started disliking the culture of the pub to a little extent (Ryu, et al, 2012).. Now it is required to go through slowly by the pub as the segmentation is first required before doing the targeting of the market. The pub is required to segment the market on the basis of the blue coloured workers and the white coloured workers. In this case separate floors can be used by the pub as it has the strength of available floor space. The new target customers can be chosen from the white colour employees and especially, from the young urban couple who frequently go for the pubs. The new target market can be again divided into two different parts; one is the family and households and the second one is the late night enjoyers and the people who prefer the weekend parties. The old target market will be remaining same but, the old target customers can be attracted by providing some more facilities and the provision (Solomon, et al, 2012). The single and the young people along with the couples can be grouped into the late nighters and the party lovers (Pomering, 2014).. 2. Positioning of the company The company would like to position itself on the basis of the current position and the offerings of the company. The company wants to look into three different aspects and those are, the environment that it is going to offer to the target customers, quality food and beverages it is offering to its customer base and the varied gaming facilities (Blythe, 2013). 3. Marketing Mix The marketing of the pub which also includes the restaurant facilities are shown below: Product: The product of the pub includes the snacks, the dinner items and the liquors. As the pub is including the facilities of the restaurant as looking at the new market demand it is planned to include the dinner items including, the fresh salad items, the potatoes baked, fish products, chicken products ( grilled chicken, roasted chicken, kabab etc), the snacks items including the crispy chicken, chips, different types of sandwiches and chiko ball. In the desserts, the ice-cream, tea and coffee will be available. In the alcohol segment now the pub is offering only the beer but, the demand is there for the hard alcohol items also. The imported drinks and the mock tails are also kept in the product line of the pub in its new business plan. For the gaming part 15 more poker machines are going to be introduced by the pub (Gssling, et al, 2012). Price: The price of the product is initially kept as medium in range and it is kept in competitive in nature. The market competition is very high and the main competition of the pub comes from another pub which has the restaurant facility and which is situated in the nearby area of the pub. In order to compete with the competitor the prices are kept as low. In this respect it can be said the pub is following the going rate pricing strategy. As the strength of the company is that it has full information and data base regarding the customer and its competitor so while deciding the price of the products it can compare with the prices of the competitors and on the basis of the competitors prices the restaurant can fix the prices. Place: The place in this case is remained same and the only difference is the organization can utilize the extra available space of the pub. The second floor of the place is remained empty and the pub can use the second floor of the entire place. The first floor is used for the purpose of serving the blue coloured workers and the second floor is kept for serving the white coloured employees. From, the market research it is evident that the pub is specialized in providing services to the blue coloured workers and the positioning strategy of the pub was based on that concept only. This is the reason the serving place of the two separate segments has been divided. Promotion: In case of promotion in the pub cum new restaurant, the existing customers are informed about the renovation of the pub and the new customers are attracted through calling them to provide invitation for coming into the pub cum restaurants (Shimp and Andrews, 2013). The handouts should be spread in the nearby areas to expand the information that the pub is going to renovate and the new menu and new environment is going to be implemented. In the promotion it is required to be informed that the timing of the pub has been increased and the party lovers are also invited (Okamoto and Polger, 2012). Process: The pub is going to improvise the new process where every customer will be approached for the feedback as the pub has already a negative image regarding the staff behaviour. Now it is the time to resolve the issues regarding the staff behaviour and it can be possible through providing the feedback form to every customer. Physical evidence: It is also evident that, the people do not want go to pub for finding out new friends but they want to find a place where the friends can be gathered together and they can enjoy the free time away from the hectic life. Physical evidence for a pub or for a restaurant is an important aspect and the physical evidence includes the areas where the interior and the exterior decoration, the music system and the environment of the pub. To recover the environment of the pub, the pub has decorated in a way so that, people can get more space to gather together. The environment should be comprised with the mild music so that, it does not sounds so noisy (Gssling, et al, 2012). To correct the existing environment the introduction of the no-smoking zone is required. People: The people are the major resource for the satisfaction of the customers and the people should be educated enough through the help of the training and development. Conclusion The company has the resources to utilize the empty space of the pub and the restaurant offerings are also required to be added. The total process of renovation should be passed on the employees also through providing proper training, the target market can be divided into three different segments; one is the household and family members, one is the young couples and the single people and the third one is the blue coloured workers. The pub is positioned itself as the quality provider. Reference Blythe, J. (2013). Consumer Behaviour: SAGE Publications.UK: Sage. Gssling, S., Scott, D., Hall, C. M., Ceron, J. P., Dubois, G. Rituals of the Nacirema Essay Example
Rituals of the Nacirema Paper To most of us, hospitals are a place to help you when youââ¬â¢re in need or want to get healthy. But for the Nacirema, itââ¬â¢s quite the opposite. According to the Nacirema ritual article, they call hospitals a latipso, which is hospital spelt backwards without the ââ¬ËHââ¬â¢. They discuss and caricature the repulsive viewings on what they think goes on in hospitals (latipsoââ¬â¢s), or what they think they do. I will now tell you how in Minerââ¬â¢s perspective, the body is ugly and how the body is dirty. In the Nacirema point of view this is how they see hospitals. In the Nacirema ritual article they call the people who dehumanize other people medicine men. The medicine men manage their sick patients dressed in costumes and headdress. The Nacirema also say how itââ¬â¢s rarity that patients actually come out of the latipso alive. They say the latipso is ââ¬Å"where you go to dieâ⬠. The Nacirema also say that adults are eager to go under the control of the medicine men. Unless you can afford to give a ââ¬Å"rich gift to the custodianâ⬠, you canââ¬â¢t be admitted into the latipso. Even if you have paid them, you will still have more to pay after youââ¬â¢ve fully recovered. The Nacirema avoid exposing their bodies, but at the latipso you are stripped of all your clothing. The Nacirema say people go into shock when they realize they had lost their clothing privileges. Even though the menââ¬â¢s wives have never seen them in an excretory act, doesnââ¬â¢t mean no one else can. The ââ¬Å"vestal maidenâ⬠makes him perform his ââ¬Å"natural functionsâ⬠in front of her. The Nacirema say on the other hand that females have to be nude and the medicine men can freely probe them wherever they please. The Nacirema say the medicine men torture their patients, and perform ââ¬Å"ablutionsâ⬠. The Nacirema consider medicine men as jabbing their clients with needles, and impairing, and making them worse than they were. The Nacirema people are more conservative and keep to themselves. Their body is their temple and is sacred to them. To sum it all up, the Nacirema people exaggerate, and make up assumptions on almost everything they see, and make things seem worse than they actually are. In our point of view this is how we see hospitals. The reasons of why the Nacirema rituals may seem bizarre to us is that we simply call medicine men doctors. The doctors in our culture dress in uniform according to theirà work position. In a hospital, thereââ¬â¢s always a chance that youââ¬â¢re going to die, and sometimes itââ¬â¢s too late for them to save you because you were too sick to begin with, or they made a mistake. But doctors do everything in their power to not let that happen and do all they can to make you sturdy enough to go home safely. In a hospital, you have to pay for the time and services of the hospital and workers, but just because you donââ¬â¢t have the money doesnââ¬â¢t mean the workers wonââ¬â¢t take care of you, we will find a way to help you and find a way for you to pay for their services. The reasons doctors examine you is to see whatââ¬â¢s causing the problem and whatââ¬â¢s wrong so they can fix it. The nurses bathe you in a bathroom where it is private from the public if you are incapable of doing so. You also have the right to keep your clothes on, unless youââ¬â¢re told to take them off for a medical reason, in exchange, you are told to change into a gown in a private room. Usually for men, when you are asked to change into a gown is for a physical, or nurses trying to examine you for a logical or medical reason. But for women being examined, if you are pregnant, this gives the doctor or nurses a reason to check on the baby and how things are coming along. Almost everyone goes through this at some point of their lives, and you are not judged or discriminated upon. When you are very sick and unable to take care of yourself and canââ¬â¢t do things on your own, it is the nurseââ¬â¢s job to take care of you. The nurses use a thermometer to check their patientââ¬â¢s temperature and give them food to help them heal and recover. On the other hand, when doctors need to cure you or prevent you from a disease or illness, they insert needles to cure that disease, or make you immune to it to help you stay healthy. The reason all the Nacirema assumptions seem bizarre to us is because hospitals arenââ¬â¢t that extreme, or donââ¬â¢t seem that way to us. People strip their clothes and lather their bodies with a greasy like substance. They then lay in a bright spaceship for a little bit while the spaceship cooks them until people are golden brown, or burnt. But thatââ¬â¢s not the only thing they do thatââ¬â¢s strange. They pour on their bodies a sticky honey like paste, and cover themselves with a sheet. The sheet is then ripped off of the people, tearing off a layer of skin which makes blood spill out, and you look as red as a tomato. These examples can be related to the two tenets of how the body is ugly, and dirty. The body is ugly because people look like disgustingly brown and red bloody creatures, which are mentally deranged. The body is dirty because of the repulsive, grotesque substances that are put on their bodies to have them be cooked, and peeled. In summarization, the Nacirema see their bodies as a temple and is very sacred to them, and have great care for their bodies. But for us, we disrespect our bodies, and disregard what weââ¬â¢re actually doing to them. What seems to be normal to us may seem bizarre and strange to others who have never seen these sorts of actions or arenââ¬â¢t used to seeing it. The way the class is related to this paper is that everyone goes to the hospital or has been to one for some reason. Also, we donââ¬â¢t take care of our bodies, and mutilate them just to look good and feel good about ourselves.

The Harlem Renaissance And Langston Hughes Essays - Free Essays
The Harlem Renaissance And Langston Hughes Essays - Free Essays The Harlem Renaissance And Langston Hughes Humanities 1020 November 29, 2000 The Harlem Renaissance and Langston Hughes The Harlem Renaissance was a great and powerful era in black history, It was an African American cultural movement of the 1920s and early 1930s that was centered in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City (Harlem Renaissance). Langston Hughes wrote Blues and Jazz flourished throughout the streets of New York, and young black artists began to arise [. . .] (63). An important part of this era had to be the inspirational writings of Langston Hughes. James Mercer Langston Hughes, born in Joplin, Missouri, February 1, 1902, was raised by his grandmother after his parents divorced (Sporre 551). He graduated from high school in Cleveland, Ohio and went off to Mexico to live with his father for fifteen months (Jackson 1). While in Mexico, Hughes lived a very rural life and wrote many of his first poems which, although never published, began to distinguish him as a writer. Hughes attended Columbia University for one year, then returned to home for a short period in 1923 before he joined the crew of the SS Malone bound for Africa (A Salute to Hughes). From there he visited many places including Paris, Venice and Genoa before once again returning to America to live in Harlem, New York, in November 1924 (Andrews 65-69). While working in Washington D.C. as a busboy, Hughes left three of his poems beside the plate of Vachel Lindsey, an American poet, who liked Hughes poetry and helped him publicize his writings (Jackson 3). Hughes first book of poetry, The Weary Blues, was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1926 (Langston Hughes). He was a great writer who completed a two volume autobiography, and edited many anthologies and pictorial volumes. Hughes dazzled writing for forty years and never gave up protesting for the rights of African Americans. He gave many motivational speeches across the nation supporting the black movement. Hughes continued his career publishing many books of poetry and prose. Langston Hughes went on to inspire the world through his literature until his d eath in Harlem on May 22, 1967 (Sporre 551). Living in Harlem, he soon discovered the culture and literary circle of the Harlem Renaissance. As best said in the Norton Anthology of African American Literature, Hughes brought the spirit of the African American people to life, using blues and jazz as the basis of his poetic expressions [. . .] (Andrews 1252). This is evident in some works such as The Negro Speaks of Rivers, and The Weary Blues. Most of his influences came from fellow black writers. Names such as, Dubois, Locke, Jesse Redmonfaset, Jean Toomer, Arna Bontemps, and Carl Van Vechten, inspired Hughes in his form and writing style (Andrews 929-930). His poems often portrayed the trials, tribulations, struggles and thoughts of a young Negro growing up in the twenties through sixties. His main goal was to express concern about the treatment of African Americans in this country, and to pursue civil and social justice. One of his most famous works is his continuing sage of Jesse B. Semple, also known as Simple. Hughes wrote columns about this fictional character, who dealt with very non-fictional problems. Jesse, who was really Hughes voice, expressed the views and ideas of young black Americans (Andrews 1252-1253). Creating Simple to be smart, strong witted and wise, allowed Hughes to publish and undermine the standard of our pretentious society, while ironically and humorously pointing out the hypocritical nature of American Racism (Andrews 1257-1263). Hughes went on writing four series of writings about Simple. Hughes used a variety of themes in both his poetry and his prose. Nathan Irvin Huggins wrote His voice was very moving when he read his poems publicly. His voice was both rich and poetic and gave strong inspiration and love to the black community (Andrews 1253). One work of his is particularly interesting. It shows the emotion and creativeness of the Harlem Renaissance in a few short lines. Hughes named this poem Cross. My old mans a white old man And my old mothers black. If I ever cursed my old white man I take my curses back. If ever I cursed my black old mother And wished she were
